Mr. Oxide Red Surfacer Spray 1000

Not every project starts with a grey primer. Mr. Oxide Red Surfacer Spray 1000 gives model builders a practical way to combine surface preparation with an authentic oxide red undercoat, reducing extra painting steps while creating a more realistic finish.

Inspired by the anti-corrosion primer used on full-size military vehicles and industrial equipment, this surfacer is an excellent starting point for armour models, heavy machinery, locomotives, and weathered subjects. As your top coats are chipped, sanded, or worn back during the weathering process, the oxide red beneath naturally recreates the appearance of exposed primer seen on real vehicles.

The 1000-grade formula also works as an excellent general-purpose surfacer. It smooths small sanding marks and minor imperfections without burying rivets, weld beads, panel lines, or other fine details. Once cured, it creates a durable surface that accepts lacquer, acrylic, and enamel paints with excellent adhesion.

The aerosol format delivers an even spray pattern, making it easy to cover everything from individual parts to complete model kits without the need for an airbrush.

Why We Like It

One of the easiest ways to make weathering look believable is to think about what's underneath the paint. Real vehicles weren't built on bare steel—they were primed first. Starting with an oxide red surfacer means every scratch, chip, and worn edge you create later has a realistic colour underneath. It saves time, adds depth, and produces a finish that's much closer to the full-size subject.

Tips

  • Apply over a clean, dry surface free from oils and sanding dust.
  • Spray several light coats rather than one heavy application.
  • Allow the primer to cure fully before masking or applying camouflage colours.
  • Use hairspray or dedicated chipping fluids over the oxide red base to create realistic worn paint effects.
  • Pair with washes, filters, and pigments to enhance the appearance of age and use.

This primer is especially popular with military modellers because it becomes part of the finished project, not just the first coat. It lays the groundwork for realistic weathering while providing the smooth, dependable surface that Mr. Surfacer products are known for.
